sansaregina:

Hysterical laughter rose up her gullet, but Sansa choked it back down. The bells were ringing, slow and mournful. Ringing, ringing, ringing. They had rung for King Robert the same way. Joffrey was dead, he was dead, he was dead, dead, dead.

every queen of the seven kingdoms: rhaena targaryen

“After the death of her husband in the Battle Beneath the Gods Eye, Rhaena Targaryen had acted quickly to protect her daughters. If Prince Aegon had truly been the king, then by law his eldest daughter Aerea stood his heir, and might therefore claim to be the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms…but Aerea and her sister Rhaella were barely a year old, and Rhaena knew that to trumpet such claims would be tantamount to condemning them to death. Instead, she dyed their hair, changed their names, and sent them from her, entrusting them to certain powerful allies, who would see them fostered in good homes by worthy men who would have no inkling of their true identity. Even their mother must not know where the girls were going, the princess insisted; what she did not know she could not reveal, even under torture. No such escape was possible for Rhaena Targaryen herself. Though she could change her name, dye her hair, and garb herself in a tavern wench’s roughspun or the robes of a septa, there was no disguising her dragon. […] [S]he rested, reading, praying, wondering how long she would be given before her uncle sent for her. Rhaena never doubted that he would, she said afterward; it was question of when, not if. The summons came sooner than she would have liked though not as soon as she might have feared. There was no question of defiance. That would only bring the king down on Fair Isle with Balerion. Rhaena had grown fond of Lord Farman, and more than fond of his second son, Androw. She would not repay their kindness with fire and blood. She mounted Dreamfyre and flew to the Red Keep, where she learned that she must marry her uncle, her husband’s killer. And there as well Rhaena met her fellow brides, for this was to be a triple wedding. All three of the new queens-to-be were widows.” // Georgia Hirst as Rhaena

everything asoiaf/got ♕ locations // Slaver’s Bay

Slaver’s Bay is a cultural and geographical region of central Essos, comprised of three city-states: Astapor, Yunkai, and Meereen. Built from the ashes of the Old Empire of Ghis, Slaver’s Bay became a wealthy hub of the global slave trade after the Doom of Valyria and subsequent fall of the Valyrian Freehold.

Although little Ghiscari culture survived the Old Empire’s
collapse, the people of Slaver’s Bay take great pride in their
Ghiscari heritage, referring to themselves as “the sons of the harpy,” and taking the mythical beast as the standard of their cities.

Until the arrival of Daenerys Targaryen, slavery was the dominant industry of Slaver’s Bay. Stories told about the flesh marts of the slave cities are dire and frightening. The cities’ slave traders form their ruling aristocracy and titled themselves Good Masters, Wise Masters, and Great Masters, depending on the city.

Ruled by the Good Masters, Astapor is far-famed for its eunuch slave soldiers, the Unsullied. The Astapori like to claim that the Unsullied are the lockstep legions of the Old Empire of Ghis come again, but unlike these ancient legions, the Unsullied are not free men but slaves raised from childhood to be utterly obedient and fearless. An old rhyme about Astapor says “Bricks and blood built Astapor, and bricks and blood her people,” referring to the red bricks of which the city is built taking their color from the blood of the slaves who made them. Because of this, Astapor is known as the “Red City.”

Yunkai is ruled by cunning and corruptedslavers called the Wise Masters. The city is also known as the “Yellow City,” referring to the yellow bricks the city is made of. Yunkai is known for training bed slaves who are taught the way of the seven sighs and the sixteen seats of pleasure.

The largest and most formidable of the cities along Slaver’s Bay, Meereen is as large as Astapor and Yunkai combined, ruled by the Great Masters. The city is made of brick, but unlike Astapor and Yunkai, Meereen’s bricks are of many different colors. The nobility of Meereen lives in stepped pyramids, like those of Old Ghis, each made of a different set of colors. The greatest pyramid of them all is the Great Pyramid, located on Meereen’s central plaza, which stands eight hundred feet tall. It is taken as the seat of Daenerys Targaryen upon her conquest of Meereen, who orders the great bronze harpy at its peak be torn down.

“Us? This is your place, Brother. This is your darkness.” […] In the cool silvery-blue light of the swords, the big wench looked pale and fierce. “I mislike this place.” “I’m not fond of it myself.” Their blades made a little island of light, but all around them stretched a sea of darkness, unending.
