(1/4) i think the anon was referring to the “all pedophiles should drop dead” post and i actually get where they are coming from. as a psychology major, i agree that statements like this do more harm than good. here is a really brief and simplified explanation of what i mean by that. ((just to make this clear, i don’t condone pedophilia. but since it’s impossible for all pedophiles to drop dead simultaneously, we have to take a realistic approach to how we prevent child abuse))

(2/4) by creating an environment that presents pedophiles as monsters who inevitable will end up abusing children and deserve to die, you’re reinforcing the idea that pedophiles ALWAYS abuse children (which is not the case btw), isolating them further from society, making them more likely to NOT seek professional help in form of (prevention) therapy because they fear being rejected by their friends, family, etc. (We are all social creatures that greatly fear exclusion and rejection).

(¾) This isolated state they’ll find themselves trapped in increases their tendencies to develop additional severe mental illnesses which, combined with their pedophilia, will make them more likely to actually end up sexually abusing children. hatefully shaming pedophiles caters to a vicious cycle that most pedophiles don’t want to end up in and that might end in the abuse of children.

(4/4)The only way to protect children from pedophiles is to make it clear that pedophilia is a mental illness that requires psychological treatment to prevent pedophiles from becoming abusers. we have to encourage pedophiles to seek professional help, simply telling them to die is counterproductive and dangerous. you wouldn’t tell someone with any other mental disorder to end their life but to get the help they so desperately need. (most pedophiles are willing to get help btw)
